Career Exploration Workshop

"The Academy is Not the Only Option"

A Career Exploration Workshop for Doctoral Students and Postdocs

About the Workshop

The traditional expectation is that doctoral students will join the professoriate, following in the footsteps of their academic advisers and other mentors. Yet, historically, less than half of all doctoral awardees are employed in the academy. In the future, as fewer universities replace departing faculty with tenure-track positions, obtaining an academic tenure-track appointment may be even more difficult.

The Graduate School and the Graduate School Alumni Society have developed the Doctoral Career Exploration Workshop in order to offer Penn State doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers insight into career opportunities beyond the professoriate and to hear about those opportunities from alumni who have forged their career paths outside the academy.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012, beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Life Sciences Building on the Penn State University Park campus. A highlight of the workshop is a networking luncheon, where alumni, doctoral students, and postdocs will have an opportunity to converse in a casual atmosphere.

The agenda for the workshop includes a keynote speaker, followed by panel discussions, where alumni are divided into subgroups, based on similarities of their profession and education, to speak with students and postdocs in small groups. A full panel discussion/Q&A session will take place after the luncheon, and additional time for networking and/or recruiting is scheduled.

The registration fee to attend the Doctoral Career Exploration Workshop is $15. To register, please visit http://www.cvent.com/d/6cqsdv.

The deadline to register is Friday, October 5, 2012.
