Grade 21 Assistantship

Appointment of a graduate student to a Grade 21 stipend level is intended for special circumstances where it becomes necessary to provide a stipend rate considerably above the typical grades of 09 through 20. The latter grades should accommodate the vast majority of appointments. Special circumstances may include factors such as extreme market competitiveness within a disciplinary field; the requirement by an outside sponsor that a specified institutional match be provided for pre-doctoral fellows that exceeds the upper (grade 20) level; other comparable extenuating situations.
